世界の"EAST(東)"に位置する大阪。
この街を"国際水準のデザイン/思考の発信場"とすることで、「大阪」という都市の新たな可能性を見いだす試みをスタートします。
かつて大阪は、世界でも類を見ない、創造的な都市でした。
堂島で生み出された米取引の先物市場システム、文楽などの上方文化、商人が中心となって川にかけた独特の橋の文化など、活力に溢れたまちがそこにはありました。しかし、戦後の大量生産・大量消費経済は、そういった大阪の創造性を風化させていき、現在の大阪から発信されるものは「粉もん」と「お笑い」という紋切り型の「大阪」が主流です。その結果、"場（ハード）"を生み出すというよりも"コンテンツ(ソフト)"の開発を続けているという状況です。
一方、世界を見据えながら大阪を拠点に活動しているデザイナーにとって、自分が活動しているまちであるにも関わらず、大阪でデザインを発表する意義が少ないという現状があります。なぜなら今の大阪には、ミラノやストックホルム、東京のようにデザイナーが世界水準で勝負できる舞台がなく、世界を視野に見据えて活動を続けるデザイナーたちは、そういった状況がすでにできているところへ出ていくしかないという状況が続いているからです。
大阪に、国際水準のデザインが生まれる状況をデザインする—。DESIGNEASTは、世界を見つめながら大阪を拠点に活動する若手デザイナーが発起人となって生まれたプロジェクトです。個(デザイナー)が中心となり、自分たちが活動するまちに、デザインする状況をデザインすることで、そこから世界を視野に入れた新たなマーケット/文化の創出ができると信じ、そのために出来事の創出と受け手の創造からスタートしようという想いから誕生しました。世界水準のアウトプットをするためには、まずは、世界を知ることが重要̶その受け皿としての場をデザインします。
その先駆けとして2009年、プレイベントとして行われた「DESIGNEAST00」では、まず世界で起こる現状/事例を知るために世界で活躍するデザイナー、企業人、メディアを招聘し、トークを中心としたイベントを開催しました。また昨年、名村造船所跡地に場所を移し行われた「DESIGNEAST01」では、「ソーシャル・サスティナビリティ」をテーマにさまざまなコンテンツを展開。国内外のデザイナー、思想家らを招聘し、作品紹介や対談を通して、維持可能な社会をつくる、デザインのあり方を探りました。来場者数は3日間で約2500人と、多くの方々にご来場いただきました。
そして今年、「DESIGNEAST02」は、「周縁と中心」をテーマに開催されます。ファッション、建築、プロダクトなど、ジャンルを横断したゲストを招聘し、トークセッションやワークショップ、マーケットや映像上映などをとおして、テーマを掘り下げていきます。

2002年同大学卒業後、インターメディウム研究所(IMI)7期生として入学。2005年まで在籍。建築・デザイン・美術・ワークショップを中心にプロジェクトを立ち上げ、活動を展開。2005年より京都造形芸術大学 空間演出デザイン学科 非常勤講師。
